Cochlear Implants

Cochlear implants are electronic devices that provide a sense of sound to individuals with severe to profound hearing loss by directly stimulating the auditory nerve. In contrast, traditional hearing aids amplify sounds to make them louder and easier for individuals with hearing loss to hear. Cochlear implants are suitable for individuals with more severe hearing loss who may not benefit significantly from hearing aids. While hearing aids are worn externally and simply amplify sounds, cochlear implants consist of both an external processor and an internal implant that is surgically placed under the skin. The internal implant converts sound into electrical signals that are sent directly to the auditory nerve, bypassing damaged parts of the inner ear. This direct stimulation allows recipients of cochlear implants to perceive sound and improve their ability to understand speech, making cochlear implants a more advanced solution for severe hearing loss compared to traditional hearing aids.
