There are three paired sets of major salivary glands that deliver saliva to the mouth and throat. The parotid gland is located along the cheek and jaw line. The submandibular gland is located under the jaw, and the sublingual gland is located under the tongue. Salivary gland disorders include stones, viral or bacterial infections, or tumors. These conditions may be caused by dehydration, trauma, or cancers that cause obstruction, pain, and swelling. Treatment for infections and stones typically includes conservative treatment including hydration, warm compresses, massage, and sialoguges (sour candies that promote salivation). Treatment for tumors of the salivary gland, which can be either benign or malignant, include surgery to remove the involved gland.
