DISE Procedure (Sleep Endoscopy )

The Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE) procedure, also known as Sleep Endoscopy, is a diagnostic technique used to evaluate the upper airway anatomy and identify sites of obstruction in individuals with sleep-disordered breathing, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

During the DISE procedure, the patient is sedated with a mild anesthetic to replicate the relaxed state of sleep, allowing the healthcare provider to examine the airway using a flexible endoscope while the patient is asleep. By visualizing the upper airway structures during sedation, the healthcare provider can identify areas of collapse or obstruction that contribute to breathing difficulties during sleep.

The information gathered from DISE can help guide treatment decisions, such as determining the suitability of surgical interventions or other therapies to address specific airway obstructions. DISE is typically performed in a hospital or surgical center by an otolaryngologist or sleep medicine specialist trained in this procedure.
