Ear infections can occur to the middle ear, ear canal, external ear, or even the inner ear. They can occur in both children and adults. They can cause pain, drainage from the ear, decreased hearing, or vertigo. Accurate diagnosis is important as the treatment for these different sites of infection are very different. Some infections require oral antibiotics; others respond well to topical antibiotics. Many ear infections can be managed by primary care physicians; complex cases or severe infections may require an intervention by an ENT surgeon.
