Professional Bio
Anca M. Barbu, MD, FACS is a board certified Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon who is fellowship-trained in Laryngeal Surgery and care of the Professional Voice. While Dr. Barbu is trained in the medical and surgical management of all aspects of otolaryngology, her area of expertise is in surgery of the voice and airway.
Expertise
She specializes in the diagnosis and management of voice disorders, including laryngeal cancer, vocal cord paralysis, and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Dr. Barbu’s expertise is in caring for the professional voice of singers, teachers, and all who use their voice for professional or performance needs.
Dr. Barbu joins the group after having been in Boston for the 6 years where she was in practice with Dr. Steven Zeitels, the surgeon famous for operating on the voices of Adele, Steven Tyler, Sam Smith. After completing her fellowship at Harvard under his tutelage, she was offered to join Dr. Zeitels as one of only three laryngeal surgeons in practice at Massachusetts General Hospital. In doing so, Dr. Barbu became the first woman surgeon in the Division of Laryngeal Surgery at the #1 hospital in the U.S. at that time.
Education
As a native of Los Angeles, Dr. Barbu graduated cum laude from UCLA with dual degrees in European Studies and Physiological Sciences. She then moved to the east coast for medical school at Drexel University in Philadelphia, and completed her residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Case Western Reserve University. She remained on faculty at CWRU for a brief period of time before moving to Boston for her clinical and research fellowship at Harvard, where she also stayed on faculty and in practice thereafter.

Dr. Barbu is a published author and presenter on innovative treatments of voice disorders in leading journals and book chapters. She has been an invited speaker on multiple laryngeal topics, lecturing as a Visiting Professor at national universities, such as Johns Hopkins and Harvard, and internationally at numerous conferences. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and an active member of the American Broncho-Esophagological Association (ABEA), American Laryngological Association (ALA), American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO), and American Medical Association (AMA). Dr. Barbu was elected to serve on one of the national committees for Women in Otolaryngology.
