Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. This obstruction leads to pauses in breathing or shallow breathing, disrupting the normal pattern of airflow and causing oxygen levels to drop.

Common symptoms of OSA include loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, daytime fatigue, morning headaches, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Risk factors for OSA include obesity, older age, anatomical abnormalities in the airway, and family history of the condition. If left untreated, OSA can increase the risk of serious health problems such as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Diagnosis of OSA typically involves a sleep study called polysomnography, which monitors various parameters during sleep to assess breathing patterns and oxygen levels.

Treatment options for OSA may include lifestyle changes, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, oral appliances, surgery, or hypoglossal nerve stimulation, depending on the severity and underlying causes of the condition. Seeking evaluation by a healthcare provider is essential for proper diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnea.
